Despite their determination to force their will upon the day and make it last longer than any Friday since the beginning of time, they found themselves in the afternoon going about looking for something to do and doing nothing in particular.” Can we separate childhood guilt from adult responsibility? This is a story of growing up in a small town in 1950s Ireland, of contending friendships and conflicting loyalties, of the opaque nature of truth and family history. It is a story of inconvenient friendships, unexpected consequences and, ultimately, of the choices we make.

1950s Ireland through the eyes of a child

This is a beautiful novel set in a fictional town very evocative of Westport.

It’s mostly told through the eyes of a child, and will bring back memories for others who lived through the same era. It will also help bring to life, a time that younger generations haven’t lived through.

Long summer holidays, harsh school regimes, freedom of a pre-health and safety era, innocent friendships and the subtle politics of the time told from a child’s perspective are some of the many topics covered.

Ultimately it’s a story about love and friendship. For me was a refreshing tale which touched on how friendships can change over time.

I think this book would make a lovely gift for locals, those who love Westport, older people who want to remember, or younger people who would like to experience recent history thorough the eyes of someone who lived during this time:-) Hope others enjoy it (and learn from it) as much as I did.
