In his new book, Holding Out for a Hero, The Long Wait for Pope Francis, Fr Brendan Hoban reminisces on his fifty years in the priesthood which he divides into two parts: the first 40 years which he describes as ‘a long, dark night of the heart and soul as the vision of the Second Vatican Council and the hope it inspired for the Catholic Church faded into the mists of history’; the last ten years under the leadership of Pope Francis as he awakens and renews the promise the Council represented; and the key challenges facing our Church at this time of transition.

Audacious hope

This book while painting a depressing reality continued to hold the initial dream Brendan had in the early days of his seminary training. The aims of the ACP were ahead of the Vatican and in our Synodal times will hopefully be realised in our lifetime.
Credit is due to Brendan for highlighting the stark realities of our Church and being brave enough to print it. This book reveals the audacious hope of one who held out for 50 years for the coming of a hero in Pope Francis.

Honest and insightful

Brendan Hoban has written a personal and insightful reflection on Pope Francis. His honest assessment of times past and his hope for a new model of church are welcome and refreshing. No doubt, this book will be welcomed by many who seek a community which reads the signs of the times through Gospel values.
